Gemstones… they have fascinated people for centuries. Not only because of their dazzling beauty, but also because of the stories and energies they carry. I have been a fan of them ever since I bought my first jewelry with my own money. Some stones I wear because they mean something to me, others simply because they enchant me. And although I don’t really have a favorite, the mysterious glow of moonstone continues to intrigue me.
🌙 Moonstone symbolizes feminine energy, intuition and inner peace. This special stone occasionally appears in my collection of vintage jewelry , often in the form of rings. Each piece seems to carry a little bit of magic within it. And although I have not yet incorporated moonstone into my own designs, I do not rule out that this will happen one day. Some stones keep calling – softly, but with conviction.
The meaning and effects of moonstone
Moonstone has traditionally been associated with the moon and feminine energy. In many cultures, this gemstone symbolizes intuition, gentleness, love, fertility and inner balance.
The name moonstone is no coincidence. The stone is named after the moon-like glow that seems to glide over its surface. That soft, blue glow has reminded people for centuries of moonlight creeping through clouds. Although the stone has no direct link to the moon itself – it is a mineral from the feldspar group – its mysterious appearance has always given it an almost mythical connection to the night light. And let's be honest: one look at a beautiful moonstone and you'll immediately understand why.
According to ancient legends, moonstones are even said to have been created from concentrated moonbeams. A beautiful image – and not entirely unjustified, because when the light glides over the stone, it really does seem to light up from within.
In India, moonstone has been considered a sacred stone for centuries. In Greek and Roman mythology, it was associated with the goddesses Selene and Diana. In medieval Europe, moonstone was worn as an amulet for love, protection and fertility . The spiritual meaning of moonstone is still palpable today – especially for those who are sensitive to symbolism or gemstone energy. Moonstone or rainbow moonstone – what's the difference?
When shopping for moonstone jewelry, you will often come across the term rainbow moonstone. Although this name is confusing (because you don't see a complete rainbow!), this is not real moonstone, but white labradorite - a related stone with a slightly different composition.
- Genuine moonstone has a floating, milky-blue glow (adularescence) that moves gently across the stone.
- Rainbow moonstone (so actually white labradorite!) shows brighter flashes of color (labradorescence) in blue, purple, green and very occasionally even yellow and orange and therefore often has a slightly more playful character.
Both types are beautiful, but it is good to know what you are choosing and what your preference is.
